LMU | LA - Loyola Marymount University

LMU's Art History program exposes students to diverse artistic traditions, providing a full understanding of the historical, spiritual, theoretical, and cultural context of works of art and visual culture. In addition, LMU’s small class sizes and commitment to individual attention help students develop advanced research, writing and critical thinking skills in preparation for graduate studies in art history and other fields.

All students are required to take a three part introductory sequence, which establishes the groundwork for an understanding of art of the western world from the prehistoric period until the present.  Two classes focusing on non-Western art serve to complement the introductory sequence.  Using these classes as a basis, students can then select additional upper-division coursework in their areas of interest from a wide array of class offerings.

As a capstone experience, majors take a junior/senior seminar that focuses on methodologies in art history.  Students learn research techniques and complete a major paper as a culmination of the course; this advanced writing serves as a preparation for those students who wish to continue their studies in graduate school.

Art History majors and minors will be equipped to work in a variety of professions thanks to the philosophical, ethical, social, and historical training they receive. Students are particularly prepared for graduate study that may lead to careers as museum curators and directors, professors, writers, and other art professionals.  Our students have also gone onto careers in business, law, and entertainment.
