LMU Jazz Ensemble

The LMU Jazz Ensemble provides a fun environment for musicians of all skill levels to improvise, learn music by ear, and read music. Music of all jazz genres will be learned and performed by either small groups or big band (instrumentation allowing).

Requirements

Auditions will take place during the first class meeting (Spring 2021: Thursday, January 13, 2022).

All horns:
Play Tenor Madness (Bb) and Billie’s Bounce (F). Tempo = Quarter note 160-170
a. Play melody
b. Improvise a minimum of two chorsues

Piano, Guitar, Vibes, Bass:
Play Tenor Madness (Bb) and Billie’s Bounce (F).
a. Play melody
b. Improvise a minimum of two chorsues
c. Piano/Gtr./Vibes, comp playing only chords
d. Bass, walk a bass line for two choruses

Drums:
Play
a. Swing groove (various tempos)
b. St. 8th groove (rock)
c. Play Latin grooves: bossa, samba, 12/8 afro-cuban groove
