Clinical Training Internships
LMU's Marital and Family Therapy practicum allows for clinical training that occurs concurrently with academic training while in the program, with students earning credits toward their degree while getting valuable hands-on experiences. Coordinated via LMU's Helen B. Landgarten Art Therapy Clinic, art therapy is provided to marginalized populations at designated sites by our students who receive supervision, support, and clinical training through the clinic.
A wide range of clinical issues are addressed including exposure to trauma and violence, vulnerability due to poverty, marginalization due to immigration or unhoused status, incarceration and the resulting symptoms of hopelessness, depression & anxiety. These internships are designed to foster student growth by allowing for the development and practice of clinical skills.
Supervisors work under contract with our department to closely monitor and support the clinical training of our students while they are gaining their trainee hours in the practicum setting. Using a strength-based approach, LMU students provide much needed services in the community that embody LMU's mission to promote social justice and our department founder Helen B. Landgarten's vision to support those facing serious obstacles in life.
Internship Courses
The Marital and Family Therapy/Art Therapy program contains two separate internships which are contracted by the department to meet the educational, geographic, and specific interests of the student. In both internships, clinical supervision and art therapy supervision are provided and students may accumulate up to 840 hours with a minimum of 350 accumulated hours providing art therapy services to individuals, groups, and/or families. Students must achieve a minimum grade of B in each course to advance and graduate.
