Internal Transfer/2nd Major Application Instructions and Overview

Thank you for your interest in our program. After carefully reviewing these instructions and application overview, please fill out our internal transfer/2nd major online form. Good luck!

To be considered as a major in the LMU Theatre Arts Program, please be sure you complete the following steps:

  1. Review your application carefully and thoroughly
  2. Assess your current academic status candidly with your current major academic advisor or mentor/friends/parents
  3. Review the Theatre Arts Mission Statement, Student Learning Outcomes, and the overall culture of department by reading the LMU Bulletin, reviewing the THEA website, talking with current THEA majors and professors, researching the scholarly discipline of Theatre Arts, and the prospective career paths afforded by a THEA degree.
  4. Complete your application in a timely manner.
  5. Follow the directions to create your video audition carefully and be sure to post publicly on YouTube, without an expiry date.

Considerations

In the process of deciding whether to add a Theatre Arts as 2nd major or transfer internally to Theatre Arts as your first major, please consider the following:

  1. The THEA major requires each student have a minimum of 4 semesters remaining towards your THEA degree at LMU in order to complete the major as an internal transfer, not including summer sessions. Additionally, we do not offer our lower division required courses over the summer.
  2. We must be in residence at LMU (not studying abroad) during your first semester with a THEA major. Any future plans to study abroad must be discussed if accepted into the major, with your THEA advisor.
  3. THEA courses are offered five days of the week and all hours of the day. We do not provide capacity overrides to accommodate internship or work schedules. You should expect to take some early morning classes.
  4. The THEA major is sequenced with a series of pre-requisites guiding progression through the major. Exceptions will not be made in order to allow for study abroad, external scheduling commitments, or early graduation.

These exceptions are in place in order to ensure that if your application is approved, your transition into the major goes smoothly, and that you are successful in achieving your degree.

Application Process Overview

We value the education of the whole person and the importance of academic excellence. Due to the impacted nature of our program, we invite applications from current LMU students who wish to make THEA your first or second major. The formal application process is as follows:

  1. Meet the deadline to submit your written application
  2. Meet the deadline to submit your mp4 video audition
  3. Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0. Recommended GPA is 3.5. Note: first semester LMU freshmen do not yet have a GPA at LMU and must wait until their 2nd semester to apply.
  4. Write a personal statement (double spaced and not exceeding 3-pages) to demonstrate your academic qualification and overall “fit” for the Theatre Arts Program’s mission and goals. This will be evaluated on both content and writing skills.
  5. Provide two original signed letters of recommendation from LMU faculty and upload to the online application form. Letters from work supervisors, athletic advisors, or coaches will not be accepted. Letter of Recommendation Fillable PDF
  6. Submit a copy of your most recent Degree Works audit report.

The Theatre Arts Program Admissions Committee and Department Chair and/or Associate Chair will carefully and impartially review all completed applications, Degree Works audit report, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation. Honoring an organic weighing principle, we will consider all indicators of academic excellence, talent, preparedness and overall “fit” for what Theatre Arts has to offer.

Please review the entire THEA Undergraduate Transfer Application carefully. Keep in mind that Theatre Arts is an impacted program. Admission is not guaranteed.

Applicants will be informed of the status of their application via email approximately four weeks after the deadline.
