As a revolution rages outside, the occupants of a brothel, or a "house of illusions", are anxiously awaiting the coming of the Chief of Police. The brothel is constructed of various rooms where "scenes" or role-plays, are acted out by the patrons, characters of society in roles of power and authority. Using costumes and props the patrons' roles are realized when they pose in public as societal figures in an effort to restore authority and order.
